Red Fox Bombay Hook

The red foxes can be spotted frequently at Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware. This young fox was sitting on the side of the road when I saw him from the car. He did not run away when I slowly approached. I had my Sigma 150-600m lens, so I was able to keep a safe distance and not scare him away, while still being able to zoom in fairly close. He continued resting and grooming himself.  He was showing signs of mange which is a common disease affecting foxes and other mammals, both wild and domestic. It is caused by mites and leads to severe skin irritation, hair loss and scabs. It is highly contagious and in severe cases if untreated will kill the animal. Very sad.
